What is Multi-Sports?

Multi-sports refers to a session or programme in which children participate in a variety of different sports and physical activities, rather than specialising in just one sport. The aim is to develop a broad base of fundamental movement skills, such as running, jumping, throwing, catching, balance, coordination and agility, as well as sports-specific techniques. Multi-sports programmes emphasise inclusion, fun, teamwork and skill development, creating opportunities for children to find out which sports they enjoy and are good at, in a safe and encouraging environment. For example, local providers describe multi-sports sessions as offering many different physical activities and sports whilst developing balance, agility and coordination.

At SportsPlayMotion, multi-sports sessions are offered alongside football training and other activities, reflecting the organisation’s goal of providing children with opportunities to discover, develop and practice a wide range of sports and activities in a safe and nurturing environment.

Our multi-sports sessions include a rotating mix of team sports (such as football, basketball, hockey and netball), striking-and-fielding games (such as cricket or rounders), racket-based activities, and athletics-style movement challenges.

Each session is designed to boost children’s coordination, speed, agility, motor skills, and confidence while they enjoy a wide variety of sports before opting to specialise.

Since multi-sports covers a variety of sports, actual sport selection may vary by provider, age group and term.
